City of Gainesville leaders will celebrate the completion of extensive renovations at Tom Petty Park with a community ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 6.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tom Petty Park, located at 501 NE 16th Ave.

The renovated park features a variety of new amenities designed to enhance recreational opportunities and improve accessibility for residents and visitors. Among the improvements are eight new pickleball courts, expanded seating areas, shade canopies, a multi-use trail with lighting, updated landscaping and a new concessions and storage building.

Additional upgrades include new restroom facilities, a Bee City Gainesville pollinator garden, a stormwater pond and a solar lighting system installed above the resurfaced parking lot. The project also added LED lighting for the pickleball and tennis courts, multipurpose field and softball/baseball fields.

The improvements are intended to create a more welcoming and sustainable recreational space while accommodating the growing popularity of activities such as pickleball, according to a press release from the city of Gainesville.

The renovation project cost approximately $2.6 million and was fully funded through Gainesville’s voter-approved Wild Spaces & Public Places half-cent sales tax program.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will provide community members an opportunity to tour the upgraded facilities and celebrate the completion of one of the city’s latest parks and recreation investments.
