“If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book.”

That’s the advice given by Lemony Snicket at the start of “The Bad Beginning,” the first of 13 books that chronicle the unfortunate beginning, middle and end of the aptly named Series of Unfortunate Events.

He gives the advice again and again—not that anyone listened. The book series has sold more than 65 million copies and was adapted into a 2004 movie and 2017 Netflix series.

Misfortune aside, if you are interested in events with successful authors, you would be better off attending “An Evening with Lemony Snicket: Daniel Handler in Person” than not attending it.

Handler, the man behind the Snicket pseudonym, will be at the Curtis M. Phillips Center for Performing Arts (3201 Hull Rd. In Gainesville) for selected readings and a Q&A session at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. The event is presented by the University of Florida Performing Arts and The Lynx, a local bookstore opened in April

On a Facebook post, Handler highlighted some of the topics that he and fellow author Lauren Groff, founder of The Lynx, will talk about, including his new memoir, the writing process, Lemony Snicket, television and film and censorship.

The event costs $15 for general admission and $10 for UF students and children. You can find tickets here.

Besides The Series of Unfortunate Events, Handler has written the four-part “All the Wrong Questions” and adult works like “The Basic Eight.” He also has several plays to his name. His recent memoir titled “And Then? And Then? What Else?” was published in April.
