Library district launches summer programming

Kick your reading into high gear this summer through a slew of Alachua County Library District programs like the Dive into Summer at the Library: Oceans of Possibilities events.

From May 28 to July 31, patrons can track their reading through the Beanstack website or app and enter to win prizes throughout the summer. Prizes include a tablet from PDQ Restaurant and weekly pizza prizes from Five Star Pizza.

The library district will kick off the summer at Reader Palooza from 10 a.m. to noon on June 4 at Depot Park. Readers can register from the event, receive a free tote bag and play games with a host of partner organizations like Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, Fun 4 Gator Kids and the Harn Museum of Art.

Mainstreet does not have a paywall, but pavement-pounding journalism is not free. Join your neighbors who make this vital work possible.

The library will also hold three special events during the summer.

  • Oceans Down Under—A live streamed event that explores the Great Barrier Reef.

    • Saturday, May 28 at 3 p.m. on Facebook and Zoom

  • Ocean Tales—Get to know Florida marine life from state zoos, museums and aquariums.

    • Tuesday in June and July at 2 p.m. on Facebook and Zoom.

  • Battle of the Books—For patrons 11- to 17-years old, the district will host a competition that pits branch against branch. Patrons pick a library branch to battle for and study from three books for the annual trivia competition.

    • July 23 at 2 p.m. on Zoom.
