LifeSouth Community Blood Centers issued an emergency need for donations after a recent cyberattack against another major blood supplier in Florida has affected hospitals across the state.

According to a press release sent Thursday, LifeSouth was not affected by the cyberattack, but the nonprofit blood bank is urging the community to donate to a local center as LifeSouth is assisting hospitals throughout the state along with helping its network of hospital partners. There is currently a low supply of blood.

LifeSouth said the blood aids pediatric hospitals, open heart surgeries, patients awaiting transplants, trauma centers and emergency services.

Donors will receive a $20 e-gift card that can be used at hundreds of restaurants and retailers. If a donor gives a double red cell donation or a platelet donation, they will receive a $40 e-gift card. While at the appointment, the donor will refreshments and a mini-physical that checks iron level, temperature, blood pressure and cholesterol.

LifeSouth said people who do not regularly donate, or are first-time donors, should donate now. Regular donors are urged to bring a friend. All blood types are accepted and type O and platelet donations are especially needed.
