The Matheson History Museum will host “A Legacy of Excellence: African American Education in Rural Alachua County During Segregation” on Saturday, Aug. 22.

The free program starts at 2 p.m. and will feature a panel discussion exploring the history and legacy of African American education in rural Alachua County during segregation at 513 East University Ave. in Gainesville.

Matheson Board 1st Vice President E. Stanley Richardson will moderate a discussion featuring former students, educators and historians who will share their experiences and perspectives on the county’s segregated schools.

Panelists include:

  • Charlene Freeney Reshard of High Springs
  • Kenneth Simmons of Alachua
  • Linton “Pop” Herring of Hawthorne
  • Aaron Green of Gainesville
  • Minister Annie Leamia Larkin-Hamilton of Archer and Newberry

The program will examine former Alachua County schools, the students who attended them, and the faculty and staff who helped educate and inspire generations of African American students despite the challenges created by segregation.

Organizers invite the public to learn about the schools and communities that shaped Alachua County’s history and to hear firsthand accounts from people who lived through that era.
