Matheson to host ‘An Evening with Frederick Douglas and Captain John Brown’

The Matheson History Museum, in partnership with the UF Performing Arts Driveway Theatre Project, will present “An Evening with Frederick Douglass and Captain John Brown” on Saturday.

The free performance will run from 2 to 3 p.m. and will take place on the front porch of the Matheson House (528 SE 1st Ave., Gainesville) as part of the Second Saturdays at Sweetwater series. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs.

Adapted by director Carol Velasques Richardson from William Branch’s “In Splendid Error,” the production explores the friendship and struggle of two historical figures in the fight to end slavery. A post-show discussion will engage the audience in conversations about race and freedom.
