Carson Willis of Alachua left the show ring on Saturday with her market steer and a grand champion blue ribbon.
Now that 1,222-pound steer is up for auction in person and on livestream and will be on display again today at the Alachua County Youth Fair and Livestock Show in Newberry.Â
The 40th annual youth event comes to a close with an 11:30 a.m. buyers luncheon and a 1 p.m. market animal sale. It’s the first event hosted at the renovated Agriculture and Equestrian Center.
On Saturday, state, county and local officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony where event organizer Dr. Cynthia Sanders, the UF/IFAS Extension director, thanked the City of Newberry for purchasing the property on which the UF/IFAS buildings sit.
Sanders reminded the crowd that even if the kids participating in the youth fair don’t become farmers, they will use the skills they learn at the facility in future accomplishments.
