On Wednesday, Alachua County, along with the city of Gainesville and the University of Florida, will host a community workshop to address street safety and pedestrian and bike infrastructure planning.
The event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Harn Museum Auditorium (3259 Hull Rd.) in Gainesville.
The workshop will introduce the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Action Plan and the Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan, two main initiatives that aim at making streets safer for residents.
The event comes in response to a wave of fatal crashes in recent years involving bicyclists and pedestrians. Alachua County declared a traffic violence crisis. The workshop will provide residents an opportunity to share their experiences and contribute to a vision of safer streets in Gainesville and across the County.
The SS4A Plan will identify and address the issues contributing to the incidents and will focus on actionable projects and policy improvements to reduce risks for all road users.
The Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan will present the first major update to Alachua County’s pedestrian and bike master planning in more than two decades and aims to enhance and expand non-motorized networks to support safe, accessible travel for residents to bike or walk.
“The development of these plans couldn’t come at a more critical time,” said Alachua County Transportation Planning Manager Alison Moss in a press release. “Together, these plans will serve as complementary roadmaps to improve the safety and comfort of everyone navigating Alachua County, whether on foot, by bike, or in a vehicle. Community input is essential to the success of these plans, and we encourage residents to be part of this important initiative.”
