The Gainesville Friends Meeting will host university professor and organizer George Lakey to discuss the release of his new book “Dancing with History: A Life for Peace and Justice.”
The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at the Civic Media Center in Gainesville, and Lakey will finish his Florida tour in Tallahassee.
According to a press release, Lakey has pushed for change from the civil rights movement to modern crusades, and his talk is titled “Lessons for Today from a Lifetime of Nonviolent Activism.”
David Hastings, a member of Gainesville Quakers, said he heard Lakey give a workshop in college about social change.
“It’s really important for those of us working for social justice to understand what works and what doesn’t,” Hastings said.
Lakey has written several other books including “Viking Economics,” “How We Win,” and “Toward a Living Revolution.”
In a press release, Bill McKibben, leader of climate group 350.org, called the book inspiring and illuminating.
“Almost no one I can think of has made better use of their time on earth,” McKibben said of Lakey.
