As part of The 250 Bash, the University of Florida will host a panel discussion examining the history and future of American democracy on Tuesday, June 30, at the Reitz Union.
The event, titled “250 Years of American Democracy: Reflecting on the Past, Shaping the Future,” will begin at 3 p.m. in the Rion Ballroom and is sponsored by the Office of Campus Engagement.
Hosted by the Office of Public Policy Events, the discussion is sponsored by the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, the Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education and the Levin College of Law.
As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, the 60-minute moderated discussion will explore the nation’s ongoing experiment in self-government and the principles that have shaped its development. Panelists will examine the successes and shortcomings of American democracy, discuss the responsibilities of citizenship in a rapidly changing society and consider the future of democratic engagement.
The discussion will be moderated by Chuck Clemons, vice president for government and community relations at UF.
Panelists include:
- Gary S. Lawson, Levin College of Law
- Teresa Cornacchione, Bob Graham Center for Public Service
- Adam Lebovitz, Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education
Following the panel discussion, attendees are invited to participate in activities and enjoy refreshments as part of a celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The first 100 UF students attending the panel will receive a commemorative eagle plushie at the conclusion of the event.
