The United Nations Association (UNA) Gainesville Chapter will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Oak Hammock in Gainesville.
This event will take place from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at 5100 SW 25 Blvd. Registration is $25 per person and includes a buffet lunch. Register by Wednesday, Oct. 22, by clicking here and pay with cash or check at the door.
The theme this year is “UN for a Better Future,” and the event will feature keynote speaker Ellen Siegel, a climate specialist who co-chairs Alachua County’s disaster-response coalition, who will talk on the topic of “The Power of We: Creating a Livable Future on a Warming Planet.” Siegel is a lifelong educator, volunteer and organizer. As a former Everglades volunteer ranger, she received the National Park Service Hartzog Award for Outstanding Volunteer.
Isabella Villa Urrego, chair of the UNA Youth Council at the University of Florida, will provide an update on the Youth Council’s community activities. The annual UNA Service Award will be presented to Dr. Taraneh Darabi, champion of UNICEF, the UN Children’s Fund and local chair of CEDAW, the UN organization for women’s rights. Darabi is a co-founder of the UNA Gainesville Chapter.
The program will also feature musical entertainment.
