1 dead, 2 injured in Columbia County accident

A 22-year-old Louisiana man died and two others were injured in a Friday afternoon traffic accident in south Columbia County.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, the crash occurred at a rural intersection between Lake City and High Springs.

A pickup truck traveling west on SW Herlong Street failed to stop at the stop sign at County Road 131, an FHP report said. An 72-year-old Fort White woman traveling north on County Road 131 struck the side of the truck with her SUV, causing the truck to spin and overturn.

The driver of the truck, a 53-year-old man from Abbeville, La., sustained minor injuries, but his 22-year-old passenger, also of Abbeville, was ejected and pronounced dead on the scene. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt.

The Fort White woman was wearing a seatbelt but still suffered serious injuries. FHP did not report where the woman was taken for treatment.

FHP said the accident is under investigation.
