2 inmates die in 3 days at Columbia County Detention Facility

Two inmates in three days were found unresponsive and died at the Columbia County Detention Facility (CCDF) in Lake City.

According to Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) releases posted on social media, a female inmate was found unresponsive by CCDF deputies on Sunday at 5:07 p.m. Life-saving measures were performed until the Columbia County Fire Rescue (CCFR) personnel arrived, but the inmate was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m.

According to the release, no foul play was suspected and the inmate’s body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for investigation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will investigate the in-custody death.

It marked the second death in three days as CCFD deputies discovered an unresponsive male inmate in his cell at 6 a.m. on Friday during the morning count. Deputies started life-saving measures on James Michael Millard, 64, until the CCFR personnel arrived and pronounced Millard dead.

No foul play was suspected and Millard’s body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for examination. The FDLE is also investigating this incident.
