51-year-old man jumps to death at UF’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium

A 51-year-old man jumped to his death inside the west concourse of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville on Monday morning.

According to a University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) release sent by UFPD spokesperson Kailey Tedjeske to Mainstreet Daily News, UFPD officers responded at 9:47 a.m. to reports of an individual standing on a cement support beam inside the west concourse of the stadium.

UFPD officers tried to speak with the man and encouraged him to walk safely toward them, but he stepped off the ledge despite their efforts.

Officers attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m. by personnel from Alachua County Fire Rescue.

UFPD is withholding the man’s name until his next of kin has been notified.

According to the release, the man was not affiliated with UF. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
