Alachua County schools to reopen on Thursday

Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS), the University of Florida and Santa Fe College will reopen for classes on Thursday.

Announcements were made Wednesday afternoon after Hurricane Idalia passed through Alachua County with little damage compared to surrounding counties.  

Private schools in Gainesville – which include Oak Hall School, St. Francis Catholic Academy and Countryside Christian School – will also reopen on Thursday.

UF made the decision to resume normal operating status Thursday with student-related activities and both on-campus and online classes resuming. UF also announced that P.K. Yonge Development Research School and Baby Gator will reopen.

SF announced it will reopen for all standard academic and business operations, along with the Academy for Science and Technology, on Thursday.

Area school districts that will not reopen until Friday include Columbia, Gilchrist, Union County and Levy.

Dixie County announced on social media that it will remain closed for the remainder of the week and updates will be posted for when schools will resume.

Suwannee County schools will remain closed until further notice.

Florida Gateway College in Lake City said faculty and staff will return to campus on Friday, but on-campus classes will not resume until Tuesday, Sept. 5.
