Multiple fire crews responded to a backyard fire that extended into a multi-unit residential structure in the Green Leaf Subdivision in Gainesville on Tuesday night.

According to an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) release, crews from ACFR and Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) responded around 8 p.m. to reports of a residential structure fire off SW 75th Street.

The initial caller reported a fire in the backyard that had extended into the building. When crews arrived, they found an exterior fire on the rear of an apartment building that had spread into one of the units. Firefighters brought the blaze under control and limited the damage to one apartment.

One person sustained a minor injury when attempting to extinguish the fire prior to the arrival of the fire crews. The individual was evaluated on scene, declined emergency medical services and refused transportation.

No residents were displaced because of the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Alachua County Fire Marshal’s Office.

ACFR reminds everyone that there is a countywide burn ban in effect and any open burning is prohibited.
