A 70-year-old Bell man died Monday evening when his pickup left State Road 26 east of Newberry, crossed the center median, went into a ditch and struck a wooden fence.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, the man was driving westbound on SR 26 near NW 218th St. at 7:09 p.m. when he left the roadway and entered the grass median. The pickup collided with a ditch and then struck a wooden fence in an open field before coming to a stop.

Emergency responders transported him to UF Health Shands Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was wearing a seatbelt.
