Bicyclist, 27, hit and killed on NW 16th Avenue in Gainesville

The Gainesville Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist that occurred Wednesday night in the 300 block of NW 16th Avenue.

According to a GPD release, officers responded to the scene at approximately 9:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision involving a motor vehicle and a bicyclist.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 27-year-old bicyclist was traveling westbound along the south side of NW 16th Avenue in the roadway and sidewalk area between the 200 and 300 blocks. Investigators said the bicyclist attempted to cross NW 16th Avenue mid-block to the north side of the roadway when he was struck by a westbound vehicle.

The bicyclist was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The crash remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately available.
