Bicyclist hit on 13th Street, driver flees

A bicyclist sustained serious injuries after getting hit by a vehicle Wednesday night around 7:06 p.m. near the intersection of NW 13th Street and NW 16th Avenue.

According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) press release, the driver failed to stop and assist the cyclist, taking off westbound on NW 16th Avenue. GPD reports that the cyclist is in critical condition.

The vehicle, a black newer model GM sports utility vehicle, is missing its passenger-side mirror, and GPD requests anyone with information to contact Officer Neal at 352-373-7744.

GPD recently launched a high visibility enforcement campaign that will focus on pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The campaign will target major roadways including 13th Street and is funded through a $27,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.
