Blood donors receive gift card over holiday season

LifeSouth Blood Donation Centers is encouraging locals to give blood during the holiday season as supply shortage remains.

From now until Jan. 2, all donors will receive a $20 e-gift card to local retailers and restaurants―along with refreshments and free checks on cholesterol, iron and blood pressure.

According to a LifeSouth press release, donations typically decrease during the holiday season, and many donors remember to donate only after a tragedy strikes. But hospitals and medical centers need daily, local donors to keep supply levels sufficient.

Blood donation lasts roughly an hour but can save three lives, and all blood donations stay local. LifeSouth supplies UF Health and is the sole provider to North Florida Regional Medical Center, the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, Lake City Medical Center, Starke ER and Suwannee ER.

COVID-19 vaccination status does not affect donor eligibility.

Across the nation, medical providers are dealing with the shortage. The Dallas Morning News reported on Friday that the Red Cross is seeing the lowest donor turnout in over a decade.
