Area Republican lawmakers joined a unanimous GOP vote Wednesday to elect a new speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives after several failed candidates left Congress at a standstill for the last three weeks.
Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., emerged as the surprising consensus candidate after conservatives ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., only nine months into his tenure. Over the last three weeks, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., came up short in efforts to win over various wings of the party.
Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Gainesville, was a vocal supporter of Jordan’s, and then this week announced her support of Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla. On Wednesday, Cammack—who represents Alachua, Levy, Gilchrist, Dixie, Columbia, Union and Bradford counties—joined the rest of her party behind Johnson.
“Congratulations to the new Speaker of the House, Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana!” Cammack wrote in a Facebook post. “Mike has been a colleague of mine on the Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government and is a strong conservative leader to help us keep our work going and deliver on behalf of the American people.”
Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., who represents half of Marion County and all of Putnam County, also supported Johnson.
Johnson is a relatively new member of Congress, elected in 2016 to represent Louisiana’s Fourth Congressional District. Before that, he served two years in the Louisiana Legislature.
Johnson called it “an honor of a lifetime” to be elected speaker.
“Thank you to my colleagues, friends, staff, and family for the unmatched support throughout this process,” Johnson wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, Wednesday afternoon. “It has been an arduous few weeks, and a reminder that the House is as complicated and diverse as the people we represent. The urgency of this moment demands bold, decisive action to restore trust, advance our legislative priorities, and demonstrate good governance.”
