Traffic on I-75 southbound near mile marker 391 north of Gainesville resumed after a tractor-trailer carrying chemical containers traveled off the road.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred at 1:25 a.m. Thursday when a 46-year-old Summerville, South Carolina man was driving a semi with two trailers southbound on I-75 and traveled onto the west shoulder where it struck several trees.
The damaged containers carrying phosphoric acid required all southbound lanes to be closed initially. Multiple crews from the High Springs Fire Department, Alachua County Fire Rescue and Gainesville Fire Rescue’s Hazmat unit responded.
According to the ACFR release, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was requested for standby since the acid was highly combustible.
As of Thursday afternoon, traffic resumed in the outside lane while emergency responders blocked two other lanes for clean-up efforts.
Emergency responders transported the driver, who sustained minor injuries, to UF Shands Hospital.
