COVID-19 cases in Florida reach 500,000; hospitalizations increase

The Florida Department of Health reported 5,409 new cases to the Florida COVID-19 Dashboard, bringing the total positive test count to 502,379 cases as of the August 4th report. This is the 11th straight day Florida has reported under 10,000 new cases.

The FDOH also reported 30,481 new tests from Tuesday. The positivity rate was 10.89% of the total, according to the report. Since July 16th, the positivity rate has stayed below 15%.

7,627 people have died from the virus in Florida, an increase of 225.

When the FDOH reports a death in the daily update, the number encompasses several days, with actual days of death occurring weeks prior in some cases. The state maintains a chart of actual days of death on its COVID dashboard showing the deadliest days as July 17 with 134 fatalities, but also more than 100 deaths each day between July 7-23.

621 new hospitalizations were reported Tuesday bringing the total to 28,573 people in Florida that have been hospitalized at some point during the coronavirus pandemic. This is the highest number reported by the FDOH for COVID-19 related admissions.

Across Florida, 7,579 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of 11 am.

Columbia County is at 2672  – up 17 from yesterday.
Dixie County is at 289 ­– up 5 from yesterday
Gilchrist County is at 330  – up 4 from yesterday
Levy County is at 632 – up 5 from yesterday.

Alachua/LaCrosse/Worthington Springs 226 – up 3 from yesterday.
Archer 72 – no change from yesterday.
Hawthorne  66 – up 2 from yesterday.
High Springs 78 – up 1 from yesterday.
Micanopy 32 – up 1 from yesterday.
