DeSantis announces bid for White House

Two-term Florida Governor Ron DeSantis formally launched his bid for the presidency on Wednesday afternoon.

The former naval officer and state legislator filed his candidacy hours before a virtual Twitter event to announce his bid to the public and kick off his campaign. DeSantis joins eight other Republicans in pursuit of the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

What does the announcement mean for the presidential race? DeSantis’s policy priorities and messaging closely resemble those of former President Donald Trump.

While Trump faces several legal challenges and baggage from his exit from office, DeSantis offers new party leadership with a familiar platform.
