FHP: Drunk driver kills Chiefland woman

A drunk driver killed an 80-year-old Chiefland woman Friday night, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported Saturday morning. 

According to FHP, the accident occurred near the intersection of State Road 320 and NW 100th Avenue in far east Levy County, a few miles south of Micanopy.

A 56-year-old Chiefland man was traveling west on State Road 320 behind the woman, who was driving a sport utility vehicle. The man allegedly struck the woman’s vehicle from behind, causing both to travel off the north shoulder of the road.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, but while the man suffered only minor injuries, the woman was pronounced deceased at a local hospital. 

FHP reported the man was arrested on the scene and charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and two counts of DUI property damage.
