According to a Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) release, multiple units responded to an apartment fire near 1100 NW 4th Ave. around 4 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a small, smoldering fire in the back room that had been mostly extinguished by the resident. Crews finished dousing the fire with a water extinguisher and removed the smoldering contents from the apartment.

An investigation revealed the fire was caused when the person fell asleep while smoking. The apartment residents awoke and were able to get out of the unit with only minor smoke inhalation.

There were no working smoke detectors in the residence, as GFR discovered they had all been disabled by the apartment’s occupants.
