The Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD) approved additional funding to complete a flood prevention project in Cross City.
The project will better stormwater management near Ruth Rains Middle School and Anderson Elementary, funneling water to Belly Deep Creek.
The district will add culvers under County Road 351 and Lovie Cannon Road, allowing stormwater to access the existing ditch on the west side of CR 351.
“The high rainfall last year in Dixie County is a testimony for the need for these types of projects,” Hugh Thomas, SRWMD executive director, said in a press release. “We look forward to seeing this project to completion and working with Dixie County in the years ahead on additional flood mitigation projects.”
The district slated the project for 2021, but heavy rainfall delayed construction and rising costs forced the district to allocate further funds. The project will cost $262,000 and will finish by April 2023.
The project is the second phase of work between Dixie County and SRWMD to mitigate flooding.
“We are very appreciative of how responsive the staff at the District have been with any request we have—our working relationship with them has been excellent,” Duane Cannon, Dixie County manager, said in a press release.
