Florida nears 10 million vaccinated

The Florida Department of Health (FDOH) reports that 9,916,161 individuals have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in Florida as of May 21.

As Florida enters its 23rd week of vaccine distribution and continues to increase vaccine access statewide, more than 30 percent of those vaccinated are seniors age 65.

A decrease in demand for COVID-19 testing means the state is transitioning COVID-19 testing to a locally led effort through the Florida Department of Health, county health departments, primary care providers and local governments.

The state operates 27 state-supported testing sites across 14 counties and is preparing to transition those state-supported COVID-19 testing sites by Friday, May 28.

COVID-19 testing services will continue to be offered at the local level at nearly 200 locations, including county health departments. The Florida Division of Emergency Management has compiled a list of COVID-19 testing sites within 10 miles of all existing COVID-19 testing sites. The list is available online.

Four weeks ago, on April 23, Florida reported 7,280 COVID-19 cases, but new COVID-19 cases have continued to decrease, with 2,336 cases reported on May 20.

The number of deaths has also declined from 63 on April 20 to five deaths on May 5.

The statewide COVID-19 positivity rate was 4.55 percent on May 20.

According to the FDOH and the Alachua County COVID-19 recovery dashboard, 104,252 residents have received all necessary doses to be considered fully vaccinated and 21,292 have received the first dose of a two-dose vaccination.

The COVID-19 positivity rate was 1.92 percent in Alachua County on May 20, and 3.8 percent for the two-week positivity average.

To provide Floridians with the latest information about vaccinations in the state, the Florida Department of Health has issued a COVID-19 vaccine report that is updated daily. This report includes information on the COVID-19 vaccine by county, race, sex and age. 

Appointments are no longer required at any state-supported vaccination site. Individuals ages 18 and older are eligible for vaccination, as well as individuals ages 12 and older receiving the Pfizer vaccine with the consent of a parent or guardian. The state is hosting mobile, one-day vaccination clinics in partnership with local community organizations to increase vaccine access. The state hosts up to 30 mobile vaccination events per day. The mobile vaccination event schedule is posted daily at FloridaDisaster.org/Vaccine.
