Gainesville approves contracts for interim manager, attorney

The Gainesville City Commission on Thursday approved a $250,000 annual contract for the interim city manager and a $197,000 annual contract for the interim city attorney.

The commission approved the contracts for Cynthia Curry and Daniel Nee as part of the consent agenda, which means the city commission did not discuss the terms of the contracts during its regular session.

Curry, who was an outside candidate for the position, was selected as the interim city manager at a special meeting on Oct. 12, while Nee, who is a 20-year veteran of the city attorney’s office, was selected as the interim city attorney at a meeting on Sept. 27.

City Manager Lee Feldman submitted his resignation on Sept. 13. His last day will be Nov. 12. Curry will start as interim city manager on Nov. 15.

Per her contract, Curry will have a $250,000 per year base salary. She will get approximately two weeks worth of paid time off when she starts on Nov. 15. The city will provide a car or Curry may select a $450 per month car allowance.

Curry has been an assistant county manager for Miami-Dade and served in upper university administration for two Florida schools. She is currently working as a diversity officer for The Everglades Foundation.

City Attorney Nicolle Shalley submitted her resignation on Sept. 8 to take a position in Levy County, and her last day in the office will be Nov. 10. While the interim city attorney position was expected to be selected on Oct. 12 as well, Shalley requested the position be filled earlier in order to give her more time to coordinate with the interim.

Nee was selected above fellow internal candidate Sean McDermott, a 10-year employee of the city attorney’s office. Nee will assume the duties of interim city attorney on Nov. 1.

As interim city attorney, Nee will make $197,000, and also will have the option of a car or a $450 car allowance.
