Gainesville Fire Rescue responds to medium-rise building fire

Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) units responded to a medium-rise residential building fire on NW 1st Avenue and treated a resident and cat for smoke inhalation on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a GFR release, the incident occurred at 2:27 p.m. at 400 NW 1st Ave. and prompted the building’s evacuation. Firefighters from GFR and Alachua County Fire Rescue responded to the scene.

During the operation, firefighters found a cat trapped inside the apartment that caught fire. The cat was removed and reunited with its owner and both were treated for smoke inhalation.

“The quick response from the crews limited fire spread allowing the crews to hold the fire in place which played a vital role in containing the fire and ensuring the safety of the residents,” said GFR Incident Commander Adam Hinton in the release.

The fire is under investigation.
