Gainesville Police investigating fatal crash involving box truck and pedestrian

The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) is investigating a fatal crash involving a box truck and a pedestrian that occurred Tuesday evening in the 2800 block of NE 39th Avenue.

According to a GPD release, officers responded to the scene at approximately 6:25 p.m. following reports of a collision involving a box truck and a pedestrian.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 49-year-old man was standing in the marked eastbound bicycle lane near an RTS bus stop when he was struck by a box truck traveling eastbound in the curbside lane.

Witnesses told investigators the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash and reported hearing the impact.

Gainesville Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead.

The identity of the pedestrian has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately available.
