The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) is investigating a fatal wreck that occurred Wednesday night in north Gainesville.

According to a GPD press release, around 8 p.m. officers responded to a two-vehicle collision that left one person entrapped. One of the vehicles had lost control while passing through the intersection at NW 39th Avenue and NW 13th Street, causing it to veer across the road and strike another vehicle almost head on.

The driver who lost control suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital, GPD said. Gainesville Fire Rescue had to extricate the other driver, who was also taken to a hospital but later died from injuries suffered in the accident.

GPD’s traffic safety unit is conducting what it considers a homicide investigation.

“Our traffic safety team will determine what caused this one car to go across the road,” GPD spokesman Graham Glover said in a phone interview. “At this point we don’t release any names, because the victim that died could be a victim of a crime. I’m not saying they were—we just don’t know.”

Glover said the investigation could take weeks or months.

“As soon as we know what happened and if in fact charges or citations are issued, we would obviously update the public on that,” Glover said.
