GPD investigating fatal hit-and-run

The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) have arrested a man in connection to a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred early Saturday morning.

According to a GPD press release, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted a hit-and-run incident at the 5700 block of SW 20th Avenue in west Gainesville. After GPD officers responded, a subsequent investigation revealed an eastbound vehicle struck a motorized bicyclist who had been crossing the road. The unnamed victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although the vehicle fled the scene, Cpl. Aaron Steman found a part number on a piece of the vehicle that came off during the collision. Investigators used Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology to match the part to a dark blue Lexus seen in the area about 20 minutes prior.

Officers identified the owner of the vehicle, 38-year-old Adam Mitchell Pearce, and arrested him for leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Police say he admitted to driving the vehicle that struck a bicyclist.

GPD said the investigation is ongoing.
