Grim milestone: Florida sets new daily COVID-19 record

Late Saturday the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) reported a record 21,015 new COVID-19 cases for Dec. 31, continuing the recent surge.

Alachua County’s COVID-19 Recovery Dashboard has not been updated since Dec. 30, when it reported 188 new cases. That brought the county total to 15,866. 

But according to the state dashboard, Alachua County has 16,230 as of the Jan. 2nd report, which includes cases recorded up to Jan. 1st. That translates to 364 cases in one day.

The positivity rate in Alachua County has fluctuated from 40.93 percent positive on Dec. 28th to 12.82 percent positive on Dec. 30th.

The Alachua County Department of Health did not respond to a request for comment on why the rate has been so erratic.

The trend of cases rising has reached the small municipalities in Alachua County and neighboring counties as well. As of the Jan 2nd FDOH report, here are the rate of COVID-19 case increases since Nov. 30th:

Counties

Alachua County has 16,230 cases up 3,417 (27 percent) since Nov. 30th.

Bradford County has 2,224 cases up 815 (58 percent) since Nov. 30th.

Columbia County has 6,135 cases up 1,354 (28 percent) since Nov. 30th.

Dixie County has 1,152 cases up 190 (20 percent) since Nov. 30th.

Gilchrist County has 1,038 cases up 275 (36 percent) since Nov. 30th.

Levy County has 1,920 cases up 515 (37 percent) since Nov. 30th.

Municipalities

City of Alachua has 769 cases up 231 (32 percent) since Nov. 30th.

City of High Springs has 419 cases up 162 (63 percent) since Nov. 30th.

City of Newberry has 772 cases up 223 (40 percent) since Nov. 30th.

City of Archer has 242 cases up 66 (38 percent) since Nov. 30th.

Town of Micanopy has 123 cases up 34 (38 percent) since Nov. 30th.

City of Hawthorne has 307 cases up 92 (43 percent) since Nov. 30th.

City of Waldo has 76 cases up 22 (40 percent) since Nov. 30th.

The overall number of COVID-19 cases in the state is at 1,354,833 with 63,148 hospitalizations and 21,890 deaths. In the past five days of COVID-19 case reports in Florida, the totals have ranged from 11,888 on Dec. 28th, to 13,467 on Dec. 29th, to 16,626 of Dec. 30th, to 21,015 on Dec. 31st and back down to 9,752 cases on Jan. 1st.
