One Hawthorne man died and another is in serious condition after the pickup they were in overturned on U.S. Highway 301 on Saturday afternoon.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, a witness claimed a pickup, driven by a 60-year-old Hawthorne man, was going northbound on U.S. Highway 301 around 3:30 p.m., changed lanes in front of him and nearly collided with him before going off road.
The driver then lost control of his pickup and, after attempting to correct it, hit a ditch, overturned, flipped over a fence and came to rest at 4701 U.S. Highway 301 north of SE 57th Avenue.
FHP reported the driver died and the passenger—a 58-year-old Hawthorne man—was in serious condition. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt.
