Hawthorne Mayor Matt Surrency is helping two Hawthorne High School teams get championship rings by launching a fundraising effort on Facebook.

Both the Varsity Boys and Girls basketball teams earned state champions title this year.

“The school is handling it,” Surrency said. “I’m just helping them raise the money,” he said about the fundraiser he posted on Facebook that has earned about $3,000 in just a week toward the $10,000 goal.

Surrency said they want to purchase approximately 50 rings.

The teams are going through the Florida High School Athletic Association and using the class rings company Balfour, which specializes in custom school rings.

“It will be about $200 a piece for each ring,” Surrency said, and added that the team might be closer to the goal than he knows since checks have also been going directly to the school made out to the Hornets Booster Club.
