Hawthorne Road single-vehicle accident injures 1

Emergency responders extricated a driver whose vehicle struck a pole on Hawthorne Road and overturned Sunday morning.

According to an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) release, units from ACFR and Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) responded at 7:54 a.m. to the intersection of Hawthorne Road and SE 43rd Street.

The vehicle struck a pole prior to flipping that ripped the passenger side of the vehicle off and the vehicle was sitting on its roof in the woods on the south side of Hawthorne Road. The driver was trapped and firefighters used hydraulic cutters and spreaders to extricate the lone occupant from the vehicle.

Emergency responders transported the driver to the ER as a trauma alert patient.

It doesn’t look like that pole is hardly damaged. I thought poles near traffic areas were supposed to give way to protect people in accidents. Even accidents they caused. I’ve never seen one that would actually split a car into fully separate pieces without severe damage to the pole. The forces involved must have been pretty extreme. (meaning pretty darned fast)
