Firefighters extinguished a brush fire on Saturday in the High Springs’ Oak Meadows neighborhood that threatened multiple structures.

According to a High Springs Fire Department (HSFD) release, firefighters were dispatched to the area of NW 142nd Avenue and NW 268th Street around 3 p.m. to a reported brush fire.

High Springs Engine 29 reported the one-acre brush fire that was advancing toward multiple structures. A southerly wind blew the fire toward a mobile home.

Additional units from the Newberry Fire Department and Alachua County Fire Rescue assisted in fighting the blaze.

The fire was stopped less than 10 feet from the mobile home and its two housebound residents.

According to the release, the brush fire reportedly started when a legally sized outdoor burn pile spread beyond its fire pit.

HSFD reminds anyone burning outside to use caution and check weather conditions before burning, along with having a water source nearby. Burn piles are required to be eight feet in diameter or less and 25 feet from a home, 25 feet from any brush or wildlands, 50 feet from a public road and 150 feet from other occupied buildings.
