I-75 crash leaves 2 dead, 2 children injured

A Sunday crash near mile marker 440 on I-75 in Suwannee County killed a man and a 6-year-old passenger while injuring two other children.

According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the wreck happened at 11:20 a.m. when a vehicle changed into the right lane and hit the rear of another vehicle, sending both vehicles into the grass shoulder. The FHP report said the vehicle changed lanes at a “higher rate of speed than other northbound traffic.”

According to the report, the vehicle that switched lanes ended upside down with four passengers ejected, a 4-year-old, 6-year-old, 8-year-old and 28-year old—all from Wimauma. Only the 4-year-old passenger was wearing a seatbelt or child restraint, according to the crash report.

Both the 28-year-old man and 6-year-old girl were pronounced dead at Lake City Medical Center, and the other two child passengers were airlifted to UF Health in Gainesville with serious injuries.

The report said the driver of the other vehicle suffered no injuries.
