A 55-year-old Fitzgerald, Georgia, man was killed and his passenger was injured when their tractor-trailer rear-ended a slower-moving tractor-trailer on Interstate 75 south of Gainesville early Wednesday morning.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, the Fitzgerald man was driving northbound at 2:36 a.m. around mile marker 380 south of the rest area along Paynes Prairie when he collided with a slower-moving tractor-trailer driven by a 34-year-old Miami Gardens, Florida, man.
In an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) release, units from ACFR, Gainesville Fire Rescue and the Micanopy Fire Department responded. The Fitzgerald man was entrapped in the semi cab and had to be extracted. A 10-year-old female passenger from Fitzgerald, Georgia, had minor injuries and was able to exit the semi cab on her own.
Emergency responders transported both Fitzgerald, Georgia, tractor-trailer occupants to the hospital.
The Miami Gardens, Florida, tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
