A juvenile male died Wednesday night in Lake City from a gunshot wound when he was handling a firearm.

According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, officers responded to 1477 NW Wayne Place to apartment 104 at 6:13 p.m. to the report of a person shot.

Officers located the juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

Initial findings indicate the victim and another juvenile were in the apartment handling the gun when it went off.

LCPD officers and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies secured the scene. Criminal Investigations Division personnel took over with assistance from investigators from the Third Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement technicians processed the crime scene and a victim’s advocate from Columbia County assisted family members.
