Keystone Heights, Bell men die in auto accident

Two men died when the van they were in failed to negotiate a curve and hit a tree in Ocklawaha early Thursday morning.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, a van driven by a 50-year-old Keystone Heights man was traveling westbound around 2:25 a.m. on County Road 464C at a high rate of speed in foggy conditions when the driver failed to negotiate a curve towards the right near SE 141st Terrace.

The van exited the roadway toward the left, entered the south grass, rotated counterclockwise and began to overturn when it struck a large tree with its roof section and became lodged under the tree.

First responders declared the driver and a 37-year-old male passenger from Bell deceased on the scene. According to the FHP report, the driver was wearing a seatbelt and the passenger was not restrained.
