Alachua County drive-thru COVID-19 testing site underutilized

Florida Department of Health Administrator Paul Myers says if you are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 you can get a test via the county’s drive-thru testing site two ways.

“First, contact your primary care physician,” Myers said. “Those primary care physicians in Alachua County know how to order the lab and fax it to the health department.”

If you don’t have a primary care physician or are unable to get through to yours, call 352-334-8810, Myers said.

“We will evaluate them and make them an appointment to go through the drive thru testing if it’s indicated.”

As of April 24th Myers said the testing site was averaging 25-30 tests a day but has the capacity to “do more than 200 tests a day.”

The symptoms to look for according to Myers are: Fever, cough, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea and possibly the loss of sense of smell or taste.

“If an individual explains that to our call center,” Myers said an appointment can be arranged.

“If people are sick right now, and want to get tested, we have the capacity to test them,” he said.
