Fire consumes semi truck on I-75

A semi truck traveling on I-75 was completely consumed with fire on Thursday night.

According to an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) report, units responded to the scene at mile marker 390 on the southbound side of the interstate.

“High Springs and Alachua County Fire Rescue worked seamlessly to extinguish the fire and prevent the spread into the trailer and surrounding trees,” ACFR reported. “The cab of the truck was a total loss.”

According to ACFR, the semi’s trailer was empty and did not catch fire. There were no injuries.

ACFR used two fire engines and a water tanker with 4,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, the report said.

While crews were putting out the fire, a traffic crash occurred that ACFR believes may have been a result of the fire.

“A mid size passenger vehicle with two occupants lost control and rolled over, causing a total loss to the vehicle,” the report said. “This accident occurred just north of the vehicle fire.  Both occupants were able to escape from the vehicle with minor injuries and both refused transport to the hospital.”

An investigation is under way to discover what caused the fire.
