A Starke man died after being apprehended by law enforcement Saturday night following a chase where the suspect fled on foot and swam into a pond.
According to a Bradford County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) release, deputies responded around 4:10 p.m. to Riverbend Estates in southwest Bradford County to serve an arrest warrant on Justin Hogg, 43, and continue investigating a firearm theft reported on Friday.
As deputies drove into the private community on a one-lane dirt road, they observed Hogg driving toward them in a Tahoe SUV. The deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the Hogg reportedly accelerated around the first patrol vehicle and rammed the second one before veering into a ditch.
Hogg then fled on foot into a nearby pond. The deputies entered the pond and were able to grab Hogg and bring him back to shore.
According to the release, deputies continued to investigate the incident and, while awaiting the arrival of a medical unit for a precautionary evaluation, Hogg collapsed.
Emergency responders transported Hogg to a local emergency room where he was pronounced dead. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was requested to assist with an independent review of the incident and the medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Why didn’t the officers perform CPR while awaiting for emergency team to arrive
Why didn’t they shoot at him as he attempted to ram their vehicles and endanger their lives?
