Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO) deputies are searching for a suspect they say is armed and dangerous in Newberry.

Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe said the suspect is a black male, age 63, last seen wearing a black shirt and black and gray bottoms in the area of SE County Road 337 and West Newberry Road (Hwy 26).

“ASO is handling the situation,” Marlowe said in a text message. “Please, allow them an opportunity to do their work. If you have information, call the non-emergency number. But, please, don’t call asking for more information. ASO will update us as it is appropriate to do so.”

According to ASO spokesperson Kaley Behl, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. at 26800 NW 3rd Place. She said the suspect stabbed a person he knew and fled the scene prior to deputies arriving at the home.

Behl said a helicopter and dog units are searching for the suspect and the Newberry schools were placed on secure mode.

Emergency responders transported the victim to the hospital.

Alachua County Public Schools announced it has canceled a planned Watermelon Day activity at Newberry Elementary School due to the manhunt.
