A Hyundai Elantra driven by a Lake City women, 73, crashed into two bicyclists from Valdosta, Georgia, around 1 p.m. on Tuesday in Columbia County.
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that one of the cyclists, a female aged 52, died at the scene and the other, a 72-year-old male, is in critical condition at UF Shands Hospital. Both bicyclists were headed west on NW Lake Jeffery Road.
The vehicle was also headed west on the road when it hit them near the intersection with NW Rossin Court, FHP said.
Thank you for calling this a crash and not an accident. While we don’t know the details of this particular bike-vehicle crash, since the driver was going in the same direction as the cyclists, she seems to have rear ended them. Cyclists riding bikes on the road have the same rights and follow the same rules and laws as vehicle drivers. Do not pass unless you can give them 3 feet. Otherwise, slow down and wait until it is safe to pass. That is the law.
This was my brother and sister-in-law. They both had helmets, flashing lights on their bikes and bright clothing. Today my brother died after being in a coma for 18 days. Yet, no charges have been filed, not even a ticket issued.
I agree with the previous comment, thank you for calling it a crash and prayers for the cyclists involved. I’ll be getting her a ghost bike ready for placement soon!
How does this happen ?? Sounds like someone was distracted!!!! Was the driver who hit the cyclist charged . So very sad.
They are both dead now. Let’s hear the rest of the story.
