The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) announced Tuesday that a motorcyclist died Sunday evening in an accident on East University Avenue.

“While traveling west at a high-rate speed on East University Avenue, weaving in and out of traffic lanes, the motorcyclist struck a vehicle crossing south through the intersection at NE 13th Street,” a GPD press release said.

Emergency responders transported the motorcyclist, an unidentified male, to the UF Shands ER with life-threatening injuries, and the man later died, GPD said. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Shands with non-life-threatening injuries.

“GPD would like to offer its condolences to the family of the motorcyclist,” the release said. “GPD would also like to remind our neighbors to drive safely and to be aware of their surroundings while operating motor vehicles.”

GPD said its traffic safety unit is continuing to investigate the crash.

The accident site is about two miles east of the UF campus, a stretch of University that has been the subject of community advocacy for increased safety. GPD spokesman Graham Glover said the section of East University where the crash occurred has not been a primary concern.

“This area has not had a whole lot of issues recently,” Glover said.
