Murder suspect surrenders to authorities

On Tuesday a wanted murder suspect turned himself in to authorities at the Alachua County Jail, according to the Gainesville Police Department (GPD).

A GPD press release said Eugene Javon Patrick, a 22-year-old Gainesville resident, came forward and identified himself as the shooter of Bobby Hopkins Jr., who was killed Saturday, May 22, at the Swamp Car Wash (912 East University Avenue).

Last week GPD put out a call for the public to help find Patrick when investigators were unable to serve an arrest warrant at his residence.

“GPD would like to thank the many members of our community who reached out with information relating to this case,” the release said.

GPD did not give a motive for the killing or any explanation of the circumstances that led up to the shooting, but it said detectives are continuing to actively investigate the incident. It called on anyone with knowledge of the case to contact GPD Detective J. Castor at: 352-872-2101 or the Alachua County Crime Stoppers at: 352-372-7867.
