Lt. Jesse Sandusky took over as Chief of Police for the Alachua Police Department (APD) after former chief Chad Scott resigned after 13 years to take a position with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO).
Interim City Manager Mike DaRoza appointed Sandusky to the position and he started on Feb. 1. He’s served with APD for 18 years, beginning as a patrol officer in 2003.
“After we learned of Chief Scott’s plans, the choice became clear who needed to take the helm,” DaRoza said in a press release. “Jesse has grown alongside the department for nearly two decades, and has developed the necessary leadership and trust our community needs to take up to the next level.”
Sandusky moved from the patrol division and worked in investigations as a detective and detective sergeant within APD’s Criminal Investigations Division. He was promoted to lieutenant and held the role of Commander of the Administrative Division.
He’s also been APD’s public information officer and served as president of the Florida Law Enforcement Public Information Officer Association for two years. Sandusky works in the community as a board member of Peaceful Paths Domestic Violence Network.
“I’m honored to have this opportunity to lead such a great team of dedicated law enforcement professionals,” Sandusky said in the press release. “Together, we will continue the tradition of providing excellent law enforcement services to the residents and visitors of the City of Alachua. The safety of our citizens will always remain top priority.”
Scott rejoined the ACSO as a Major and took charge of the Department of Operations. He worked for the ACSO prior to his stint as the ACPD Chief.
